There were 114 confirmed deaths and around 700 people were injured after two major explosions at the Tianjin Steel Factory on Wednesday, 12 August 2015. The explosions were due to the improper storage of the large amounts of the highly toxic sodium cyanide.
Fires were blazing for almost 22 hours after the initial explosion. Toxic waste specialists and firefighters were called to the scene in order to contain the situation. Over 1,000 firefighters and 143 firetrucks worked on putting out the flames with 70 of the firefighters going missing after handling the massive fire.
The explosions were so massive that they could be seen from space satellites and it also set off china’s National Earthquake Network.
There are thousands of people in the area that are left homeless and expected to be staying in emergency shelters until accommodations can be found. The Greenpeace organization has warned Tianjin residents that the chemicals involved in the incident can still pose an ongoing threat but the Chinese government has own played the threat.
