The International Code Council
The International Code Council (ICC) is a national association of 57,000 worldwide members with multitudes of partnerships with affluent global organizations, businesses, and governments. Their goal is a noble one, to build safer and more environmentally friendly communities. How do they do it? By creating specific standardized codes that are respected and followed due to their integrity and expertise. Just a few of the codes they’ve created are the International Building Code, the International Energy Conservation Code, and the International Fire Code. They’ve come a long way in their journey, and have undoubtedly saved many lives with their efforts. Each year, the ICC brings to the public Building Safety Month, which is a month long public awareness campaign offering incredibly helpful tips, tricks, and information. This week of Building Safety Month focuses on “Building a Brighter, More Efficient Tomorrow“.
Building Safety Month Environmental Tips
The ICC offers a wealth of information on the subject of becoming more environmentally friendly, all of which can be accessed through the ICC’s Building Safety Month website link. A few interesting examples of the information they provide are a carbon footprint calculator, green building video tips, and a building green brochure. Some other environmental tips they offer are:
- Use energy-efficient light bulbs, turn off lights and unplug electronics not in use
- Seal air leaks for maximum cooling and heating insulation
- Install programmable thermostats for easy and convenient heating/cooling system changes
- Upgrade windows, heating and air conditioning equipment with newer technology
- Change filters frequently
- Install more insulation in walls and attics
- Choose energy efficient appliances, consider natural gas appliances
- If you are building new, consider the best position on the lot for trapping light and energy, and make use of energy-efficient foundation, framing, plumbing, wiring and HVAC systems now available
