Fire Inside a Storage Tank
Yesterday around noon, a fire began for unknown reasons inside a storage tank containing ferrous sulfate owned by a company called Pencco. Fortunately, all employees were evacuated and no injuries have been reported; we were lucky that ferrous sulfate isn’t an incredibly hazardous material. Also, due to the quick respondents from the fire department, they were able to extinguish the fire in about three hours. Although Pencco has received fines in the past from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, their fines were paid, and their current permits are active and adequate.
What Can We Do Better?
It may be that Pencco is completely void of blame for the fire starting and taking three hours to douse. However, this situation could’ve been a lot worse had the material inside the storage tank been of a higher flammable or health danger. It could be that a storage tank just isn’t the safest way to store potentially harmful chemicals. We can offer fire-rated chemical storage solutions that would likely prevent this from ever happening to you and your company. The lives of those in your community are your responsibility if you are handling chemicals at a project site.
