As humans, we have created and live in a dangerous dichotomy between invasive manmade chemicals and the natural environment they threaten to destroy.
Hazardous materials are a necessary component of modern society. Despite their sometimes-sinister connotation, the inclusion of such substances are crucial to new construction the repair of existing buildings. With such awesome power to create and destroy, we must mitigate their dangerous effects by properly storing hazardous materials and following government regulations for disposal once these items have passed their shelf life.
It’s therefore unfortunate when handlers of toxic materials are reluctant to follow these commonsense guidelines. Some of our more careless cohorts are even so blatant to egregiously dump toxic and hazardous material at the most convenient point.
Don’t become a polluter, invest in the U.S. Hazmat Rentals advantage
Los Angeles County is dealing a band of such chemical abandoners after responding to a hazardous material incident in a bustling industrial park. Reports surfaced earlier this summer that three 55-gallon drums had released toxic material.
Hazmat response teams were understandably perturbed by the negligent disposers.
“Many times, we find that people will do illegal dumping throughout the County of Los Angeles, and they’ll leave the products out, and other people have to be responsible for them,” said a captain with LACOFD Health and HazMat.
The contents of the barrels remain unknown and we’ll likely never know why they were so carelessly left behind. This wasn’t the first time this summer that complete disregard for our fragile ecosystem was so audaciously exhibited. Hefty fines are expected to be leveraged against a Northern California asphalt plant after the company allowed a spill of liquid asphalt to cover the barren earth with a thick, crude layer of noxious chemicals.
Scrutiny, however, is nothing new to the asphalt plant, which goes by the brand name of Greka. Environmentalists are still working to determine if the intentional dumping of asphalt into an unlined pit, which is also known as a surface impoundment, has contaminated adjacent farmland. Workers have affectionately dubbed the pit as an “asphalt reservoir” and claim it has been used for this exact purpose since WWII. Particularly concerning is the fact that Greka doesn’t even have a permit for the storage of hazardous waste.
Storage locker spill containment sump prevents hefty penalties
At U.S. Hazmat Rentals, we encourage every business that is even considering handling hazardous materials to contact the EPA for the proper documentation, so they can avoid hefty penalties. Compliancy is a cornerstone of proper storage and human decency.
