US Children in Constant Danger of Chemical Exposure
About a month ago, the Center for Effective Government released an analysis of schools in relation to the location of facilities that report to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Risk Management Program. The online interactive map can be viewed and analyzed here. The overwhelming amount of facilities that carry potentially harmful chemicals is scary information, brought into full comprehension by the orange dots depicting such a facility that nearly cover the entire right half of the country. The actual numbers are as follows: 4.6 million children at almost 10,000 different schools are at risk every day, since their schools are located within a mile of facilities whose chemicals are reported to be harmful if spilled, released into the air, or involved in an explosion or fire. In North Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska, roughly one in every three students are at risk, and in West Virginia, about one in every eight. This news is alarming to say the least, as accidents happen all the time, and companies are caught every year with lax safety regulations and negligent practices. The Center for Effective Government, as well as various other organizations, are mobilizing and pushing for stricter laws regarding school locations and health and safety regulations. For the safety of the kids and the public in general, it is important to be as educated as possible regarding safety compliance, and as safe as possible when storing hazardous materials.
