Paint Ingredients are Combustible and Flammable
The composition of paint today is typically resin, solvent, pigments, and additives. Typically non-hazardous, resin is the material that creates a coating on the surface being painted, known as the binder, which helps the paint attach to the surface. The solvent is the material that helps keep the paint in liquid form, but once applied, will evaporate and allows the paint to dry. The solvent in oil-based paint is usually a hazardous material such as mineral spirits or xylene. Pigments are natural or synthetic materials that add color to the paint. There are a number of different types of pigments, although they are usually non-hazardous. Be wary though, old paint made before 1978 could have lead in it, which is highly toxic. Lastly, there are additives, which can have a range of properties that affect the paint in different ways, such as emulsifying, adding texture, improving finished appearance, fighting bacteria, adding UV resistance, etc. Since the range of additives is wide, they can be either hazardous or non-hazardous.
Paint Storage Tips and Options
Store your paint in a dry area with moderate, controlled temperatures. Paint that gets too cold or too hot will end up ruined; extreme temperatures can cause hardening or separating. After the lid is sealed tight, turn it upside down for storage! The paint will create a natural seal that stops airflow, which makes it last longer. Don’t forget to label the paint with the date it was bought, the name of the location it was bought, and the name of the color! Finally, store your paint in a safe place! Paint is usually a hazardous material which can explode or catch on fire. Not to mention, the cans are bulky and a hassle to organize! We offer fire-rated chemical storage options that are perfect for paint storage!
