Safety Laws in Mississippi
The Mississippi River brings drinking water to over 250,000 residents, and TV-6 recently reported that there is no advance warning system in case of an emergency chemical spill. Considering millions of pounds of oil and hazardous materials are stored on its shores and shipped along the river, an emergency warning system needs to be implemented for the residents’ safety. To add fuel to the fire, TV-6 also reports gaps in laws regarding the storage tanks themselves. Similar to the problems seen in West Virginia, there are strict laws regulating underground storage tanks, but above-ground tanks lack oversight. It seems steps are being taken to fix both of these issues now, but we are fortunate that these lacksadasical safety laws in Mississippi didn’t create the “perfect storm” and hurt thousands of people.
