Time and time again, we hear news about chemical fires, explosions, leaks, or other hazards. Educating the public, as well as those who work with chemicals on a daily basis, is likely the best way to avoid dangerous mishaps involving potentially hazardous and toxic substances. Something as simple as a pesticide can, in reality, easily transform into a noxious gas capable of killing.
Tragedy in the Home
According to CNN, four children have died in Texas after someone in their home sprayed water on a previously applied pesticide, causing a reaction that produced toxic phosphine gas. At least five other people were hospitalized in the incident. One family member was reportedly using water to wash away the pesticide – aluminum phosphide – which had previously been applied under the home. At this point in the investigation, the incident has been ruled an accidental poisoning as officials continue to investigate the matter.
One child died at the scene and the other three passed after being taken to the hospital – the oldest was 17, the youngest 7. Several first responders were also taken to the hospital for treatment after being exposed to the gas. The gas responsible, aluminum phosphide, is listed in the Toxicity Category I by the Environmental Protection Agency – the highest and most toxic category. Specifically, the EPA points to the “acute effects via the inhalation route.” The substance was applied under the home to kill insects and burrowing rodents.
